Lighting Task
We looked at various types of lighting such as natural, tungsten and fluorescent, and aimed to gain an understanding of different lighting and how best to use them in different situations.
Below I have chosen to present fluorescent lighting. For the three photographs I altered the white balance in order to create a different lighting effect.
Sebastiao Salgado: Genesis
I visited the Salgado exhibition at the Natural History Museum. The exhibition is called Genesis which represents a quest for the natural, pure world. It explores the areas of the earth that have been untouched by globalisation and development, looking at people, landscapes, biodiversity. He searched for the remote regions on our planet where nature is at the helm and peace, beauty an majesty can be found.
Salgado searched for this eden in the tropical rainforests, vast deserts, polar circles and mountain ranges, where he managed to capture the untouched or spoiled earth. His photographs are said to be "a visual tribute to a fragile planet that we all have a duty to protect". He has often said that his work is political, as it can provide both knowledge and motivation to protect the earth, but in Genesis he also just portrays beauty. Salgado was originally an economist and worked closely with the World Bank which allowed him to travel to places such as Africa where he first started taking photographs. In 1973 he made the transition to become a photographer where he firstly worked on news assignments and then veered towards documentary photography. Personally I found his work inspiring as he managed to capture the undamaged world and portray its beauty, while reminding us how fragile it is and how quickly it is disappearing.

Social Documentary Task
Journey Task
Elliot Erwitt said "To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place". When in Spain I documented a walk that I went on and captured the interesting things in my surrounding. I knew that I would come across wide, arid landscapes which can be seen to the left. Although I also discovered lots of dilapidated objects and buildings, such as the ruins in the bottom right hand corner and the rusty, disused sign in the top left. |
